New RRFB installed on King Street to replace existing crosswalk signal

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) is excited to announce that a new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB), has been installed along South King Street, in between Pāwaʻa Lane and Artesian Street. This long-awaited pedestrian safety signal replaces the existing flashing crosswalk signal fronting Times Supermarket.

The previous crosswalk signal was installed in 2014 and experienced numerous operational issues over the past year, prompting the need for a more reliable pedestrian crossing treatment.

This new solar-powered RRFB allows pedestrians to activate the warning system by pressing a button when they are ready to cross. Once activated, bright, rapid flashing LED lights alert approaching drivers that a pedestrian is entering the crosswalk, increasing visibility and helping drivers recognize that they need to stop.

This installation supports the City’s ongoing commitment to Pedestrian Safety, Complete Streets, and Vision Zero initiatives, aimed at keeping everyone on Oʻahu’s roadways safe.

DTS reminds drivers to remain attentive, slow down when approaching pedestrian crossings, and watch for activated RRFBs. Pedestrians are also encouraged to use designated crosswalks and follow all pedestrian signals when crossing.
