City closely monitoring Tropical Storm Nolo as it strengthens south of Hawai‘i

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu continues to closely monitor Tropical Storm Nolo as it strengthens south of the Hawaiian Islands and is forecast to become a major hurricane over the next several days.

Nolo strengthened into a tropical storm Wednesday morning and is expected to continue intensifying, becoming a hurricane as early as Thursday and potentially reaching major hurricane strength as it approaches the state this weekend.

While the current forecast does not indicate conditions of significant concern for Oʻahu, City officials emphasize that uncertainty remains about Nolo’s eventual track and intensity. Tropical cyclone forecasts can change, and even relatively small shifts in the track could change the potential impacts across the state.

Right now, the most significant potential impacts remain focused on Hawaiʻi Island and Maui County. Oʻahu could still see strong, gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and elevated surf as Nolo moves through the region.

The City’s Department of Emergency Management continues to closely coordinate with the National Weather Service and other City and state agencies and will adjust preparations as conditions warrant.

Residents should continue to monitor the forecast and use this time to make sure emergency supplies, medications, and family plans are up to date.

There is no need for extraordinary preparations on Oʻahu at this time. However, residents should not become complacent. Nolo is still several days away, and its track and potential impacts will become clearer as the storm develops.

The City will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
