9/23/26 – THREE MOLOKA‘I NĒNĒ KILLED BY DRIVERS AHEAD OF NĒNĒ AWARENESS DAY 2026

“Nēnē hold a deep cultural significance in Hawai‘i and to many, they are part of our ‘ohana,” said Maui District Forestry Specialist Jeff Bagshaw. “If drivers see kūpuna or keiki near a roadway, we slow down, ready to brake to keep them safe. Please drive with the same cautions around this endangered species as you would with members of your family.”

An adult male was found deceased on Kamehameha V Highway on Sept. 8. His male and female offspring, confirmed by leg bands they wore, were found one day later near the same spot. Nēnē form strong social and family bonds and the loss of one bird can lead to the loss of others in the same family.

The three nēnē were part of a group moved from Kaua‘i to help rebuild populations on “The Friendly Isle.” Lethal incidents like these not only impede the progress of conservation efforts but threaten overall species recovery.

Nēnē are skilled fliers but their large size hinders a quick liftoff in front of fast-moving cars. Drivers are asked to observe a nēnē’s movements when they appear near a road or highway and proceed with caution to avoid a fatal strike.

If you accidentally injure wildlife, please report it. Timely information helps protect these animals. If you see resource damage or violations, call the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) at 808-643-DLNR (3567) or submit anonymous tips via the DLNRTip app, text message, or online form at:  https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dlnrtip/

“September 26 is Nēnē Awareness Day in Hawaiʻi. Help spread the word to be aware of nēnē in our neighborhoods and on our roads, every day,” Bagshaw added.
