Honolulu Zoo to close at 1 p.m. saturday due to increasing winds from Hurricane Lala

HONOLULU — The Honolulu Zoo will close to the public at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 15, as strong winds associated with Hurricane Lala begin to increase across Oʻahu.

The precautionary closure is intended to protect visitors, employees, and animals as weather conditions are expected to deteriorate through Saturday afternoon and evening. Oʻahu remains under a Tropical Storm Warning as Hurricane Lala moves through the Hawaiian Islands.

Zoo staff has been preparing throughout the week for the storm, including securing facilities and equipment, checking emergency supplies, and reviewing contingency plans for the care and safety of the zoo’s animals. Staff will remain on site as necessary to monitor conditions and care for the animals throughout the storm.

The Honolulu Zoo will remain closed until conditions are assessed and the facility is determined to be safe to reopen. Updates on the zoo’s operating status will be provided through City and Honolulu Zoo communications.
